Superior rooms on the upper floor also have AC. All the rooms have great Caribbean Sea views. The 2 SC cottages are located nearby & each has 2 bedrooms, fully equipped kitchen, living area & large deck. Tamarind’s terrace restaurant & bar is at the foot of the gardens on top of the cliff & serves good local & international cuisine. It also has Kubuli beer on tap! Also within the gardens is a swimming pool & sun terrace. Your host Annette can take you on personal tours, or arrange them for you. German, Swiss, Italian, Spanish & French as well as English are spoken here. Scuba diving packages are also available using the services of East Carib Dive. The name of this accommodation option speaks volumes – it’s hard to think of many places in such a remote setting. A rough 3km feeder road from the western margins of Concord takes you into the lush forests of Pagua Hills where you eventually arrive at Roots (yes, you definitely need to rent a 4×4). Surrounded by thick forest, 4 cottages each comfortably sleep 2, but could take up to 6. 2 cottages are stand-alone, the other 2 form a duplex & have large private verandas. All cottages have private bathroom facilities, mosquito nets & Wi-Fi. Roots is off-grid & is powered by a hydro system from the bounding river. The hillside gardens have beds of flowers & vegetables & there is an off-ground covered platform where you could pitch a tent. There is a nearby river cascade & pool. There is a restaurant & bar for guests only. Managers live on site.

Perched on the hillside between St Joseph & Mero, Mango Island Lodges offers stylish, laid-back & very comfortable accommodation. The rooms have en-suite bathroom, ceiling fans, mosquito net, TV & Wi-Fi. The garden terrace has an infinity pool & jacuzzi with uninterrupted Caribbean Sea views. Scuba diving, snorkelling, hiking & other island tours can be arranged for you (you can rent dive & snorkelling equipment here). Mango Island’s restaurant is open to guests & the public & is also a relaxing place to chill out with a coffee, juice & a good book. English & French spoken.

Nestled on the banks of the Laurent River near the village of Bells, Riverstone is a great place to drop in for food & refreshments after exploring some of the sights of the Heart of Dominica. Serving good value Creole & international food, it is usually open Wed–Sun with occasional live music at the w/end (check FB page). Just turn up.
ROMANCE CAFE Mero; tel: 767 449 7922. Located on the beach at Mero, Romance Café is a very popular bar & restaurant – for good reason. Frédérique serves great food – a blend of local with a hint of French cuisine. Her menu changes daily according to what is available. There’s always a wide range on offer & it’s always fresh, tasty & good value. Cool & convivial, Romance is a great place to chill by the sea. It has a small boutique selling local products & it hosts regular cultural activities & events inc the annual Reggae On The Beach. Just turn up for lunch & dinner.
